The Pencona Race climbs from Aldeanueva de la Vera to the Sierra de Tormantos, on the southern slopes of Gredos, and reaches its highest point at the Collado de las Yeguas, at 1,450 metres. Its most recognisable section is the Paso de los Buitres, a steep climb set in a narrow gorge that has become the hallmark of the event; the rest of the route alternates between ravines, chestnut groves and the tracks that link the orchards of the La Vera region. It is organised by the Town Council of Aldeanueva de la Vera and counts towards the Copa de Extremadura of the Federación Extremeña de Montaña y Escalada. Alongside the main route, a Mini Pencona is held, designed expressly for those getting started, on a short and not very technical course, and a walking route, so the day covers all three levels of participation.
