The Foncea Trail is run in the north-western end of La Rioja, in a small municipality tucked away between Burgos and Álava, and follows the paths of the Montes Obarenes, the limestone barrier that separates the Bureba from the Ebro valley. Its two routes climb to the cliffs and beechwoods of the mountain range from the town square, with moderate elevation gain that makes the event one of the most accessible on the La Rioja calendar while still being fully a mountain race. It is organised by Ascentium Eventos Deportivos and forms part of the Circuito Riojano de Trail Mountain Races Chiruca Experience. It has become one of the most sought-after fixtures in the region: recent editions have sold out the race numbers before race day, with 850 participants. The programme also includes a walk over the short route and a children’s race.
